1. Tool settings (F2)
  2. Tool painting functions
  3. Text tool
Brush modes for painting on picture areas are one of ArtEffects strength. In the Tool settings it is possible to choose between a variety of painting modes and the opacity. With the chosen color together it makes it easier for you to get brilliant results during painting progress, retouch or layer copies. For more information of the brush modes, consult your manual. For all the people, who own only the demo of ArtEffect, we explain some of the modes with expressions. Please take some time and try all or some of the modes to become used to them. You surely need them in your today work with ArtEffect.

1. Matte

Please load the picture "Apfel.jpg" from the Arteffect-volume PICTURES. Doubleclick on the freehand tool. In the Tool settings the Cycle-Gadget must show Color. Your chosen color must seperate itself from the red and green colors of the apple. Please open the Brush-Manager via the MENU WINDOW or the functionkey F4, if it`s not already open. Activate SPITZE 3 as the painting brush. Now make two small marks on the apple, it will be enough for our work. If you have done this, click on the cut tool (it`s the scissors) and be sure that the rectangular tool will be activated with it. If not, click on it. Cut a piece out of the apple, which is identical in color an shape of the area you painted the stripes in. You will see it as the new brush in the Brush-Manager. Now you must change the cycle-gadget in Tool settings to Matte, because you want to paint with the color(s) of your new brush. If you do not change it, you will paint with the chosen color and the shape of the new brush. Try it by yourself to understand the difference between Color and Matte. Back to our work and the function Matte. Retouch now the "destroyed" area of the apple with the brush. Voila... the stripes are gone and the apple looks like an apple. As you see, this is one of ArtEffects advantages to make your work easier.

2. Multiply

The Mutliply can be compared to the effect you got if you lay two sildes over each other and project them on a wall. The colors are overlayed and the picture becomes darker. It is the same in ArtEffect. With the color white nothing will change - it is transparent for the other colors like with the slides. With the color black the effect is inverse - logical.
Please change the cycle-gadget of the Tool settings to Multiply and the Opacity to 100%. Then choose a lighter color (not white) and draw with it into the picture. Watch the changing done by the mode. After this try the same with a darker color (not black).
The Multiply mode is used for under-exposed pictures, to increase the depth without loosing the color of the undernaeth laying picture, in cases of overlaying color pictures with line drawing or to simulate a paper- or canvas structure, where you can find more color in the depth of the structure.

Negative Multiply works inverse.

3. Lighten & Darken

In this mode the chosen color is compared with the color under the actuel brush position. If you want to lighten the picture your chosen color must be lighter then the picturecolor. If you want to darken it, it must be darker. Try it with the apple picture. Change the Opacity during your work.

Try the Texticon with all the paint modes.
4. Hue, Saturation & Luminance

With Hue you transfer the hue of the chosen color to the picture without touching the brightness of the picture. It is used for colouring. With Saturation you increase or decrease the saturation of the picture, depending of the used brush color. With Luminance you can transfer Light-Dark-Structure from texture to your picture.

5. Impressionist

The mode Impressionist enable you to morph your scanned picture into a painted one, easely. Try a bigger brush (SPITZE5 to SPITZE9) to get stronger results.
